What causes skin pigmentation?

Many factors can cause an increase in melanin production. But the main factors are sun exposure, hormones, age and skin injuries or inflammation. Pigmentation can also be due to some metabolic health conditions.

What is the best pigmentation treatment in Mumbai?

I always begin pigmentation treatment with a detailed consultation. This allows me to understand the factors causing pigmentation in your case. Then I advice blood tests to check deficiencies and other internal problems.

Depending on the tests, you may have to take oral medicines to cure the problem from within your body. Along with this there will be pigmentation creams and skin lightening creams. I also recommend treatment sessions for safe and quick treatment of pigmentation.

Pigmentation removal cream

Alpha hydroxy acids such as lactic acid and glycolic acid exfoliate dead cells. While Azelic acid and kojic acid help by bringing normal skin color. Ascorbic acid and Niacinamide restore the skin health. And Tranexamic acid blocks further pigment formation.

A triple combination containing Hydroquinone, Mometasone and Tretinoin is FDA approved. I do not prefer the triple combination as it reduces pigmentation but has many side effects. The American Academy of Dermatology has suggested banning this medication.

*Note: Do not try home remedies while using these medicated creams.

Oral Supplements

Oral supplements for pigmentation play a very important role in pigmentation control. Tranexamic acid (TXA), Glutathione and sun protective tablets are the newest effective drugs. While we have been using antioxidants such as vitamin C since a decade. Pycnogenol, proanthocyanadin and polypodium leucomatos are new supplements available in my clinic.

Chemical Peels

Pigmentation treatment with chemical peels involves application of a peel solution. In the past we used glycolic acid 20%-50% or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) 15%-30%. But new generation of peel solutions are a combination of sevaral active ingredients.

This treatment gives you a smoother skin and even tone complexion by removing dead skin. It causes skin repair and removes dark patches on the face.

Mesotherapy

Pigmentation treatment with mesotherapy delivers active ingredients to the deeper layer of the skin. Ingredients such as ascorbic acid, glutathione and tranexamic acid dissolve deeper pigmentation.

Mesotherapy is ideal for reducing pigmentation and reversing the effects of sun damage. Besides this, it strengthens the skin and reduces sensitivity. It also speeds up repair of the skin to give it a more youthful appearance. Mesotherapy improves collagen and is one of the best anti aging treatment too.

PRP Skin Treatment

PRP or platelet rich plasma treatment uses growth factors from your own body. This is one of the most natural pigmentation treatment.

PRP is collected from your blood and injected into the pigmented areas. The activated platelets release several growth factors which heal the pigmentation. PRP treatment has no side effects and works for each and every patient.

Glutathione Injections

Glutathione is an advanced skin whitening ingredient. It lightens the whole body from inside. Glutathione for skin whitening is available as tablets and injections.

When you take glutathione pills, it takes about 6 months for skin lightening. While glutathione injections for skin lightening show results in a month.

Laser Pigmentation Treatment in Mumbai

Laser pigmentation removal uses laser beams to reduce hyperpigmentation. This treatment removes pigment that is already formed. It has no role in preventing further pigmentation.

Lasers work better for people with light skin tone. If you have wheatish or brown skin, they may cause the skin to darken instead of improving your complexion.

Many different types of lasers are used to treat pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

Underarm pigmentation is best treated with laser hair removal and oral medications with a cosmetic dermatologist.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) for Pigmentation

This treatment is also known as photo rejuvenation or the photofacial. The IPL treatment targets pigmentation, freckles and age spots. It reduces pigmentation, treats broken capillaries and also has anti aging benefits.

What is the cost of pigmentation treatment in Mumbai?

Pigmentation treatment cost in Mumbai depends on many factors. Most important is the type of pigmentation and how deep the pigmentation is. It also depends on the method of treatment that we use in your case.

So, the cost is much less for early or mild pigmentation. Whereas the treatment of severe or dark pigmentation costs more. The cost of pigmentation treatment in Mumbai starts at Rs 3500 at my skin clinic in Mumbai. Laser pigmentation treatment starts at Rs 6500.

Pigmentation Treatment FAQs

What are the different types of pigmentation?

Tanning

Darkening of skin colour on exposed areas is common in coloured skin. Exposure to UV rays from the sun and other sources of light causes pigmentation on exposed areas. This is skin tanning. Tanning is very common in Indian skin type, which is skin type 3 and 4.

Melasma

Melasma is dark patches pf hormonal pigmentation on the face. It is seen on cheeks, nose, upper lip and forehead. Both men and women can develop melasma. But cases of melasma are more common among women.

Melasma occurs in pregnancy or menopause due to hormonal changes. Oral birth control pills and hormone replacement can also cause this skin problem. Hence, it is also called ‘pregnancy mask’.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Inflammation is pain, itching and swelling on your skin. When inflammation heals and causes a patch, we call it post inflammatory pigmentation. PIH is usually seen as acne scars and after injury, infections or allergic reactions.

Acanthosis Nigricans

If you are overweight and have dark underarms, you have Acanthosis. These condition gives velvety dark patches on the neck, underarms and inner thighs. Acanthosis patches can come on the forehead, temples and sides of the cheeks too.

Macular Amyloidosis

Amyloidosis begins as itchy, dark patches on the upper back, arms or legs. As time goes by, the patches become thicker and darker.

Freckles

Freckles are tiny clusters of pigmentation seen on fair skin colour. In India it is common in Kashmiri, Punjabi and other north Indian families. Freckles have a familial occurrence. These tiny spots of pigmentation darken on UV exposure and sun exposure.

Liver Spots and Age Spots

Solar lentigos and lentigines are dark brown spots seen on the face and exposed areas of the body. These are common in fair skin and the older age group. They are called age spots as skin has lost its ability to repair damage caused by sun and UV rays.

Generalized Pigmentation

Many internal diseases can cause pigmentation over the whole body. This happens in conditions like lichen planus pigmentosus, Ashy dermatosis and atopic dermatitis. Some skin cancers also cause pigmentation.

Drug Induced Pigmentation

Many oral medicines cause pigmentation. These include pain killers, epilepsy medicines malaria tablets, antibiotics and ayurvedic medicines.

Birthmarks

Birthmarks are spots or patches seen on the skin since birth or form as the child grows older. These are better handled with cosmetic surgery or laser treatment.

Under Eye Dark Circles

Dark circles around the eyes are also a form of pigmentation. We have a different page dedicated to this problem.

Is pigmentation treatment painful?

Most patients tolerate the treatment very well as there is little or no discomfort. Of course, some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. For that, we offer a numbing cream to prevent pain.
