Hair loss may occur in the form of patches in the scalp, beard or body hair. The most common cause of patchy hair loss is a condition called Alopecia Areata. Patchy hair loss is more common in children than in adults.
Other common causes
- Seborrheic dermatitis or severe dandruff
- Tinea Capitis or fungal infection of the scalp
- Furuncles or bacterial boils
Several other medical conditions of the scalp can cause patchy baldness in children and adults. Diagnosis of the lesser common conditions usually requires a small scalp biopsy for confirmation.
Treatment
Patchy hair loss needs to be diagnosed accurately and treated accordingly. In most cases complete hair regrowth is possible with early treatment. Treatment modalities include topical, oral and intralesional medication. Advanced treatments such as Mesotherapy, Stem Cells and PRP therapy may sometimes be required.
