Hair loss may occur in the form of patches in the scalp, beard or body hair. The most common cause of patchy hair loss is a condition called Alopecia Areata. Patchy hair loss is more common in children than in adults.

Other common causes

• Furuncles or bacterial boils

Several other medical conditions of the scalp can cause patchy baldness in children and adults. Diagnosis of the lesser common conditions usually requires a small scalp biopsy for confirmation.

Patchy hair loss needs to be diagnosed accurately and treated accordingly. In most cases complete hair regrowth is possible with early treatment.
