Dark discoloration around the eyes is ‘dark circles’. These dark circles may be associated with under-eye bags and under-eye hollows. We call them ‘puffy eyes’ and Tear Trough deformity.

There are many causes of dark circles. But stressful lifestyle and use of screen devices are the main problem.

What are dark circles?

Dark circles is a condition in which the skin around your eyes appears dark in color. Besides this, the skin may also feel dry and sensitive. People with dark circles may also have puffiness under the eyes and eye hollows. Needless to say, the condition affects men as well as women of any age.

What are under-eye bags?

Under-eye bags are caused by fluid retention in the eyelid area. This causes blood to pool beneath your eyes and produce a dark color.

There are many reasons why you may have fluid retention or bloating. Aging, high salt diet, hormonal imbalance, and certain medications may be to blame. Thyroid disease, kidney disease, and heart ailments also cause under-eye puffiness.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels improve the skin repair cycle. They remove the dark pigment to make the new skin healthier and lighter. Chemical peels also increase collagen and improve skin thickness.

At Ambrosia Aesthetics, we use advanced nano-technology peels. These new generation peels contain many ingredients instead of only a single ingredient. These include Glycolic acid, azelaic acid, ferulic acid, and phytic acid.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a treatment that passes healing ingredients deep into target areas. It causes deep skin repair and the new skin is stronger and healthier. I choose the ingredients according to your under-eye problem. The Meso-cocktail is different for different patients.

I use advanced ingredients such as Epidermal growth factors and stem cells. Besides these, I also use rutin, melilotus, ascorbic acid, glutathione, vitamin B3, etc. Mesotherapy works very well on fine lines under the eyes. It can reduce swelling and bags under your eyes too.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid or HA. Hyaluronic acid is a natural part of plump and healthy skin. Aging, UV exposure, and weight loss can reduce hyaluronic acid as well as collagen in the skin. This causes volume loss in the under-eye area.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are available in syringes. We use hyaluronic acid to repair the under-eye area. You see an immediate change after the procedure. This makes under-eye fillers very popular treatment.

We have all global brands such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero at our skin clinic.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet rich plasma or PRP uses growth factors from your blood. This treatment lets the body get rid of dark circles by healing naturally. The growth factors present in PRP repair the damaged skin and tissues.

PRP treatment is effective for all types of dark circles. As well as puffiness and under-eye hollows. Even a single session can cause significant repair over a short time.

Laser skin resurfacing

Lasers are very effective in dark circle treatment. We have many lasers that remove under-eye pigment and improve blood circulation. The Q switched Nd:Yag laser (1064nm), Q switched ruby laser (694 nm) and Q switched alexandrite laser are some of them.

We do not use pulsed dye laser, 1320nm Nd:YAG laser, 1540nm erbium glass laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) anymore. This is because of side effects such as pigmentation and scars.

Dark Circles FAQs

What causes dark circles under the eyes?

Under-eye aging

As you age, your skin loses collagen and becomes thinner. This allows the blood circulation around your eyes to be seen through your skin. Hence, the under-eye area appears darker.

Under-eye aging may also cause other problems. These include under eye wrinkles, crow’s feet lines and eye bags. It also causes brow drooping and hooding of upper eyelids.

Eyestrain

Late nights are an important cause of dark circles. Lack of sleep causes severe eye strain. This allows blood vessels beneath your skin to show through.

When you don’t sleep well, you develop fluid retention under your eyes. This under-eye puffiness is called under-eye bags.

Your dark circles may also be due to shadows cast by eye bags. Dark circles under the eyes are not always a sign of tiredness. But, stress and fatigue seem to worsen the look of many people.

Family history of dark circles

Dark circles can be inherited. When you have thin skin, the blood vessels around your eyes are more visible. Genetic dark circles tend to show more as a bluish tint, and may get worse with age due to the loss of skin-plumping fat. A family history of dark circles and a history of allergies usually go together.

Poor metabolism

Poor glucose metabolism causes a condition called Insulin Resistance. This metabolic problem causes the skin around your eyes to look thick, dark, and velvety. This condition is called ‘Acanthosis’. Hormonal problems such as thyroid imbalance and PCOD also cause under-eye circles.

Natural pigmentation lines

There are some natural lines of pigmentation located all over your body. These ‘Pigmentary Demarcation Lines’ or PDLs are present on the upper, outer side of your cheek. Sun exposure, stress, and hormonal changes make these lines appear darker. As a result of this dark patches form under your eyes, sides of your cheeks, and on the forehead.

Allergies

Your allergies and eczema can also result in dark circles. Allergies cause the body to release histamines that cause blood vessels to dilate. Inflammation, itching, and rubbing of your eyelids leads to thick and dark eyelids.

UV damage

Overexposure to the sun can cause your body to produce excess melanin. Melanin is the pigment that provides color to your skin. Too much sun exposure and no sun protection can cause pigmentation on the eyelid skin.

Types of dark circles

According to our medical books, we divide dark circles into different types. The treatment of each type of dark circles is different and focuses on addressing the root cause. I make sure to assess your under eye area to suggest the most effective under eye treatment.

  • Pigmented type (P) appears as an infraorbital brown hue.
  • Vascular (V) type appears as blue, pink, or purple hue with or without under-eye puffiness.
  • Structural type (S) appears as shadows formed by eye bags, loss of fat, and tear trough deformity.
  • Mixed type (M) combines two or three of the above conditions.
  • Pigmented-vascular (PV)
  • Pigmented-structural (PS)
  • Vascular-structural (VS)
  • Combination of the three (PVS)

How to prevent dark circles?

Sleep well

Lack of sleep or disturbed sleep is an important reason behind dark circles. You may also want to consider sleeping with an extra pillow when your eyes are puffy. Raising your head will make the fluid move away from your lids and help to reduce puffiness.

Another thing you can do to prevent dark circles is, avoid blue light exposure. Blue light is the light emitted by screen devices like mobile phone. You can place green-tea tea bags on your eyes at night for a soothing effect.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen

If your under-eye area looks brownish, it may be due to pigmentation. The skin around the eyes is sensitive and can develop sun damage. Sun exposure increases crow’s feet and dark circles by causing UV damage.

You can prevent this by wearing sunscreen around your eyes daily. Also, invest in sunglasses that have 100 percent UV protection or UV 400 protection to block the sun’s UV rays.

Discard expired makeup

Many women use concealers to cover up under eye dark circles. Using an old or expired product can irritate your skin and worsen the problem. Discard any eye makeup that causes dryness or irritation on the eyelids. Also, discard any eye makeup that you opened more than 6 months ago.

Don’t rub your eyes

Itching, rubbing or scratching your eyes can lead to dark circles under eyes. Itchy eyelids could be a sign of ‘Atopy’ or ‘Seborrheic Dermatitis’. Moisturize your eyelids well and avoid all eye makeup till the rash persists.

What about under eye creams for dark circles treatment in Mumbai?

Under-eye creams are not so effective to reduce the appearance of dark circles. You can use under eye creams in mild dark circles where you need slight improvement.

I prescribe under eye creams with chrysin, haloxyl, and vitamin K along with FDA approved sessions. Other effective ingredients are retinol, ascorbic acid, and kojic acid. Needless to say, the broad-spectrum sunscreen application is very important.
