Make up mistakes to avoid

5 Makeup Mistakes That Worsen Your Acne According to a Dermatologist

Makeup was made to enhance your natural beauty. But if used improperly, it can actually create the opposite effect. Our very own dermatologist, Dr Niketa Sonavane warns us that wrong makeup products and practices can do more harm than good on your skin. By avoiding these makeup mistakes, however, you can use makeup and have better skin at the same time.

#1 You Don’t Prep Your Skin

A good skincare routine will not only help your makeup adhere better, it can also improve the state of your skin. So if you don’t prepare your skin before you do your makeup, then you’re definitely off to a bad start.

Before putting on makeup, make sure that you are applying it on a bare and clean face. You can prevent excess oil production and acne by moisturizing your skin with an oil-free product.

#2 Your Makeup Products are Expired

This is one of the most common beauty mistakes that people make. Makeup products tend to be really expensive, which is why a lot of people hold on to these items until they have been fully used up. However, keeping these products isn’t really cost-effective since they can cause acne and other serious skin issues in the long run.

Professional Beauty points out that mascara should be discarded after three months of use. Foundations, concealers, and lipsticks can be used up to a year, while powder products are safe to use for 18 months. Liquid eyeliners should be thrown away in three months, but pencil eyeliners can last up to three years.

#3 You’re Using Makeup Products with Bad Ingredients

Acne-prone skin can be very sensitive, which is why it’s important for you to check if your makeup products contain acne-inducing ingredients. As much as possible, avoid using products that contain pore-clogging ingredients like oil, petrolatum, and lanolin.

If you want to cover up some trouble spots using foundation, then you should look for products that are oil-free and non-comedogenic so that they won’t cause acne. Furthermore, Pretty Me recommends that you use setting sprays with willow bark extract, which can balance and reduce excess oil on your skin. This can help prevent acne while ensuring that your makeup lasts all day long!

#4 You Blend Your Products Using Dirty Tools

Cleaning might not be everybody’s favourite task, but it’s definitely important if you want your skin and your makeup to look good. Insider cited that beauty sponges can serve as a host for fungus, while dirty makeup brushes can contain a lot of bacteria.

You can avoid acne and infections by cleaning your makeup tools regularly. On the other hand, if you like blending your products with your fingers, then you should sanitise before touching your face. This practice will reduce skin irritation and allow your makeup to adhere better, at the same time.

#5 You Aren’t Properly Removing Your Makeup

After a long day, you might be feeling lazy or too tired to wash off your makeup. However, the Indian Express emphasizes that if you sleep without removing your makeup, then you will irritate your skin and clog your pores.

Double cleansing is an effective method that will help you remove all the products that you have applied to your face. You can start by wiping off the makeup using micellar water or a cleansing cream. Finally, you need to apply a gentle cleanser to take off all the makeup and skincare products that you have used.

You can still use makeup products even if you have acne-prone skin! Make sure that your skin will definitely look beautiful by using the right makeup products, tools, and practices.
